You've just landed at Pearson Airport with a roaming plan that charges $15/day. Before you've even found your Uber, you're already down $30. Here's how to avoid that — and which plan actually makes sense for your trip.
The Canadian Carrier Landscape
Canada has three companies that own physical network infrastructure: Rogers, Bell, and Telus. Every other carrier (called an MVNO) rents space on one of these three networks at a lower price. The signal quality is identical — only the price changes.
Option 1: eSIM (Recommended for Most Visitors)
If your phone supports eSIM (iPhone XS or newer, most flagship Android phones from 2020+), skip the physical SIM entirely. You can activate a Canadian plan before you even board your flight home.
- Airalo "Canada" eSIM — 1 GB for ~USD $4.50 · 3 GB for ~USD $9 · 10 GB for ~USD $22. Data only — no calls/texts (use WhatsApp). Activates in 5 minutes via QR code.
- Holafly Canada — Unlimited data for 7 days ~USD $27 · 15 days ~USD $44. Best if you're staying for multiple matches and stream heavily.
- Nomad Canada — 1 GB ~USD $5 · 5 GB ~USD $14. Clean app, solid mid-range option.
Best for: Fans who want zero hassle and don't need a Canadian phone number. WhatsApp/iMessage handles calls and texts fine.
Option 2: Budget Physical SIM (Best Value for a Month)
Public Mobile — $25–$34/month (Telus Network)
Public Mobile's $25/month plan gets you 1.5 GB data + unlimited Canada calls and texts. Their $34/month plan offers 5 GB. No physical stores — pick up a SIM kit at Walmart, 7-Eleven, or Real Canadian Superstore for $10, then activate online at publicmobile.ca.
Lucky Mobile — $25/month (Bell Network)
1 GB data + unlimited Canada calls/texts for $25. Available at Walmart, Best Buy, and select convenience stores. Bell's network gives excellent coverage around BMO Field and the downtown core.
Koodo Mobile — $40/month (Telus Network)
5–8 GB data with unlimited Canada calling for ~$40. Koodo has physical stores at the Eaton Centre (15 min from BMO Field by TTC) — good if you want in-person setup help.
Option 3: Big Carrier Store (Easiest, Not the Cheapest)
Rogers / Fido — $45–$65/month
Rogers has kiosks inside Pearson Terminal 1 arrivals and at the Eaton Centre. Fido is their budget brand. Expect to pay $45–$65 for 10–15 GB. Pricier than MVNOs but staff can set up your phone on the spot.
Bell / Virgin Plus — $45–$65/month
Available at Bell stores and Best Buy. Virgin Plus is their mid-tier brand. Similar pricing to Rogers. Strong coverage near BMO Field and Liberty Village.
Where to Buy
- Pearson Airport (Terminal 1): Rogers Express kiosk in arrivals, Bell kiosk, Wireless Wave. Expect a 15–20% airport premium on all prices.
- Eaton Centre (220 Yonge St): All major carriers and MVNO retailers. Best selection and competitive pricing. 15 min from BMO Field on TTC.
- Best Buy (various): Carries all carriers. Staff can help with setup.
- Walmart (various): Public Mobile and Lucky Mobile SIM kits off the shelf — cheapest option.
What NOT to Buy
- Airport "tourist SIM" kiosks: The colourful kiosks near baggage claim are often marked up 40–60% above retail. Walk past them.
- Hotel data packages: Enormous markup. Never worth it.
- Your home carrier's roaming add-on: Unless your carrier has a specific Canada deal, $10–$25/day for limited data adds up fast. A local plan for the whole tournament costs less than 3 days of roaming.
Quick Recommendation by Profile
- One match, 3–4 days? Airalo eSIM — 3 GB for ~USD $9, done in 5 minutes before you land.
- Multiple matches, 2–3 weeks? Public Mobile $34/month at Walmart. 5 GB + unlimited calls for the whole stay.
- Need in-person setup help? Rogers or Bell store at Eaton Centre. Budget $50–$65 CAD for a month plan.
- Heavy data user? Holafly unlimited eSIM for 15 days (~USD $44), or Rogers' 30 GB prepaid plan (~$65 CAD).
One more thing: Canadian carriers upgraded capacity at BMO Field and Exhibition Place for the tournament. Expect faster-than-usual speeds on all 6 match days regardless of which carrier you're on.
